"No." She gave him a weak smile. "I'm fine, really."
"You're a little pale. Why don't we take a break." His worried brown eyes searched her
face. Beau spotted a bench under a nearby tree. Gently, he guided her to it. "I'll be right
back."
Alex blew a few loose strands of hair out of her eyes. It had gotten hot on the dance
floor, but she couldn't understand why everyone treated her like a china doll. Was it the
way all men treated women, or did she really look that bad when she thought about her
predicament. Personally, she wanted to give herself a slap on the back. So far, she hadn't
had a mental breakdown. As long as she didn't dwell on what happened to her she could
almost pretend it didn't happen. Almost. Until she went to reach for her Water Pik shower
nozzle, or heat a cup of coffee in a microwave that wasn't there.
The warmth of a hand resting on her shoulder startled her. Instinctively she grabbed the
thumb and forefinger__whoever it was would be sailing over her shoulder in a second.
"Alexandra."
Her free hand came to her throat as she released his fingers. "Trey, you scared me. I
must warn you to never sneak up on me. It could hurt."

He smirked at her. "What could you possibly do to me that would hurt?"
She gave him a dazzling smile. "Don't tempt me."
Beau came back with a drink for her. He gave her a relieved smile. "You look much
better."
"Thank you." She took the offered drink.
"Why? What's wrong with the way she looks?" questioned Trey.
"Nothing." His friend gave Alex an appreciative smile. "She looks exquisite tonight. She
just looked a little faint earlier. I brought her out here for some fresh air and Viola', she is
beautiful once again."
"Another fainting spell?" he asked accusingly.
"I don't have a history of fainting." Alex crossed her arms under her bosom angrily.
"Well, I've seen you do it twice."
She stood up to face Trey. "That is a lie!"
"Oh?" One brow arched. "My servants found you on the floor after you fainted, no
doubt. And you did it again when you first saw me."
Both ignored Beau's avid attention.
She looked down at the lace that edged her dress. "Okay, so maybe once or twice, but I

really don't faint at the drop of a hat."
Trey offered her his hand. "Come on. If you'll dance with me, I promise not to drop any
hats."
Alex laughed. "Deal."
Neither noticed Beau's surprised look.
Trey wondered about his own sanity. He was starting to get used to her strange talk. It
really did seem to fit her.
ALEX SIGHED as her head hit the pillow. The soft tick mattress molded around her
body like a lover, easing away the busy night. A soft smile played on her lips as she
remembered how much she enjoyed this evening, although she and Trey still had a few
spats, they dissolved quickly. Almost like neither wanted to be too far from the other.
Trey's attentiveness made her giddy. His quick wit and devastating smile melted any
resolve she had to keep her distance from him. Tonight she realized how attracted she was
to this headstrong male. Snuggling deeper into the bed, she drifted off to sleep.
A noise near her head woke her. She sat up quickly. The darkened room showed nothing
out of the ordinary. Hesitantly, she lowered herself back down on the bed. Her mind had

just started to drift off again when she heard a floorboard squeak. Both eyes opened wide.
Someone was in her room.
A slight movement caught her attention. From the quick glimpse she got of the intruder's
outline, it wasn't someone she knew. With a deep exhale, she prepared for whoever to make
their move. Alex didn't have to wait long.
A strong hand roughly covered her mouth. She could smell alcohol and sweat on her
attacker. Instincts kicked in. The metal tang of blood filled her mouth as she bit fingers.
Her attacker swore, confirming that he was male. When he pulled his hand away, she
lunged up off the bed, causing the bed to bang against the wall, and shoved.
The loud groan made her smile. She had knocked him off balance. She watched warily
as he rose to his feet.
"A fighter, huh? I like a woman with a little spirit."
"I think you'll find I have more spirit than you can handle," she said, her body poised.
When he came at her again, Alex sidestepped him, giving a swift chop between the
shoulder blades. He crashed against the wall, groaning louder.
Another loud crash made her jump as she whipped her head toward the door. The
doorframe splintered and broke away as the door caved in.
Chapter 6 101
In the doorway, stood Trey, fire-poker in hand. "What's going on?"

Chapter 7
ALEX STARED at Trey. He knocked down the door to protect her, like some sort of
hero. Something she didn't expect from him. [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
